Florence Magee (née Harmelin) is a creative and cultural industries specialist with an MBA in Creative Industries Management. She has worked in the creative industries for over 15 years, from apprentice to entrepreneur. Originally from France, Florence has lived in Dublin since she came as an Erasmus student in 1998, apart from the period 2010-2017 which she spent in London.
With a BA in Management from the Kedge Business School (France), Florence gathered sales and management experience in a wide variety of businesses, from corporate to craft. Having built a career in IBM, she escaped corporate life to apprentice with handweaver Beth Moran on Clare Island and opened her weaving studio in Dublin in 2007, Ergane Textiles. A knee injury put a term to her weaving career, so she decided to merge her background in business management and her experience as a designer-maker to provide impactful support for micro-businesses in the creative sector.
Florence honed her consulting skills and industry expertise at the MBA Management of Creative Industries at the University for the Creative Arts (Kent, UK), from which she graduated with distinction in September 2011 with a thesis on business support for designer makers in Dublin. She subsequently published a number of articles on business support in the creative industries.
Florence provides mentoring services as well as workshops, talks and lectures on Entrepreneurship and the Creative Industries for students and professionals. She has worked with clients such as University of the Creative Arts, University of the Arts London, University of Hertsfordshire, Kings College London, Craft Central, Design and Craft Council of Ireland, Design Corner, Original Kerry
Florence is a PRINCE2 trained project manager with European and national funding expertise. She ran SPACE’s flagship ERDF-funded professional development programmes from 2012 to 2017, supporting over 1,000 creative practitioners to increase their sales and innovate their products and services. She now works at the Fire Station Artists’ Studios, a leading visual arts organisation in Dublin, Ireland.
The term ‘The Network of Atoms’ was coined by Florence during her MBA research to recognise the way creative microbusinesses naturally tend to grow.
